How is Sports Massage different to other massage?

This is a form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue to benefit a person engaged in regular physical activity.

Soft tissue is connective tissue that has not hardened into bone and cartilage. This includes:

  • Skin
  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Fascia

Sports Massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma.

The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury. (Paine, T. 2007. The Complete Guide to Sports Massage.)

Massage is by no means a cure but it significantly helps reduce stress and tension, promote relaxation as well as numerous other benefits (discussed in full on both the Human Sports Massage and Equine Sports Massage Therapy pages) which in turn will stabilise equilibrium for you and/ or your horse.

Swedish/ Holistic Massage have some aims in common with Sports Massage such as:

  • Physical/ Mental Relaxation

Sports Massage is specifically designed to assist active people in their sport or fitness activities.

A Sports Massage Practitioner is concerned primarily with:

  • Muscular and Skeletal Alignment
  • How exercise affects the body's systems
  • How massage can promote or reduce these effects for the benefit of the athlete
  • Injury Prevention
  • Promotion of recovery from exercise
